About Us

Mojave Mini Donkeys is located in the beautiful high desert wilderness of Southern California, just outside of Joshua Tree National Park.

Our five-acre homestead sits at the mouth of a canyon with panoramic views of the San Gorgonio and San Jacinto mountains - the perfect desert meets mountains landscape that we always dreamed about! Since 2020 we have been tirelessly working to improve the land through both restoring its natural ecosystem and planting and raising species that thrive in our high desert climate.

But it was only in 2023 that we discovered the silly, sweet, and affectionate nature of miniature donkeys, and fell in love with them immediately. Not long after, we officially welcomed Geronimo, Red Wing, and the absurdly tiny Wolfie to the homestead as our lifelong companions.

The idea of guided mini donkey hikes was born out of the pure joy we experienced watching people from all walks of life interact with our three boys!

With their unexpectedly tiny stature and big personalities, Geronimo, Red Wing, and Wolfie have charmed countless desert locals and visitors alike on their strolls down Pioneertown’s historic Mane Street and hangouts at Red Dog Saloon. It was seeing the indescribable connections these tiny donkeys build in just minutes with complete strangers that led us to find even more ways to share them with others.

We quickly discovered that donkeys are not just highly intelligent, sensitive souls; they are also avid hikers built for navigating the desert landscape. So what better way to share these sweet companions than inviting others to hike alongside them against the backdrop of California’s natural beauty?

Our Donkeys

Red Wing

Red Wing is our newest addition to the homestead, and we love to call him our “proper donkey”, because his size, shape, and stoic nature are much more representative of the typical mini donkey than both Geronimo and Wolfie! Since the very beginning he has been not only gentle, graceful, and trusting, but also extremely soft and huggable. He loves to tilt his head down and lean into people affectionately, and always follows our lead.

Red Wing’s only vice is allowing himself to get a bit hangry now and then - he never fails to let us know with a loud bray that he’s ready for breakfast or dinner!

Geronimo

Geronimo was named after seeing a famous portrait of the Apache warrior giving what can only be described as “the stink eye”. The resemblance of that look to one we’ve received countless times from our Geronimo was uncanny! He always wears his emotions on his sleeve, whether he’s in a grumpy mood, feeling saucy, or just unbearably cheeky and sweet.

As Wolfie’s older brother, Geronimo always looks out for him and hates leaving his side. We noticed early on that he absolutely loves to walk on lead and explore new terrain, making him an excellent hiker. But above all else, Geronimo is a true lover of affection, and will happily rest his head on any willing shoulder.

Wolfie

Don’t let Wolfie’s small stature fool you, because this tiny donkey is full of spunk and personality! Standing at just 25.75 inches tall, Wolfie narrowly misses the record for the tiniest donkey in the world.

The younger brother of Geronimo, Wolfie is known for his cheeky maneuvers while play-fighting, such as slipping away between two creosote shrubs through a passageway only he can fit. He can be a bit slow on hikes due to his tiny legs, but he’s always eager to tuck his ears back and burst into a trot to catch up!

Wolfie is a true gem - incredibly adorable, always loving, and endlessly entertaining!
